Dossier

James Lloyd Spencer (July 30, 1947 – February 10, 2002) was a left-handed first baseman born in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Selected by the California Angels in the first round (11th overall) of the 1965 draft out of Andover High School in Linthicum, Maryland, Spencer worked his way through the minors, batting .292 with 28 home runs and 96 RBIs for El Paso in 1968 before reaching the majors. He joined the Angels full-time in 1969 and established himself as one of the American League's premier defensive first basemen, leading the AL in putouts and fielding percentage at his position in 1970. He also saw time as a designated hitter later in his career.
