Jim Tyrer

James Efflo Tyrer (February 25, 1939 – September 15, 1980) was an American professional football player who played offensive tackle and is widely regarded as one of the most dominant players of his era. After an All-American career at Ohio State, he played 14 seasons of professional football from 1961 to 1974. He spent 13 years with the Dallas Texans / Kansas City Chiefs of the American Football League, which later joined the National Football League, and his final season with the NFL's Washington Redskins. Standing 6'6" and weighing as much as 322 pounds, Tyrer was known for his size, quick footwork, and intelligence, as well as a notably large head that he used to impose his will on opponents. He was selected to nine Pro Bowls and named first-team All-Pro six times. A cornerstone of the Chiefs' success, Tyrer served as a team captain for four years, from 1967 to 1971, a span that included the team's Super Bowl IV championship season. Owner Lamar Hunt credited him with helping establish Kansas City as a major sports town. Tyrer is often referenced as "the greatest player not in the Hall of Fame," reflecting both his lasting impact on the sport and his much-debated omission from enshrinement.
