Jim Wynn

James Sherman Wynn, nicknamed "the Toy Cannon," was an American professional baseball center fielder who was born on March 12, 1942, and died on March 26, 2020. Over fifteen seasons he earned his nickname for the power his bat generated despite his small frame, listed at 5 feet 9 inches and 160 pounds.

Wynn attended Taft High School and signed with the Cincinnati Reds as an amateur free agent in 1962. That season he played for the Tampa Tarpons of the Florida State League, appearing mostly at third base and batting .290 with 14 home runs. After the 1962 season, the Houston Colt .45s selected him in the 1962 first-year minor league player draft. He opened 1963 with the Double-A San Antonio Bullets of the Texas League, splitting his time between shortstop and third base while batting .288 with 16 home runs in 78 games, before earning a promotion to the major leagues in July.

Wynn spent ten of his fifteen seasons with the Houston Colt .45s, later the Astros, from 1963 through 1973. He went on to play two All-Star seasons for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and finished his career with two additional seasons spread across three other teams.
