José Joaquín Azcue López was born on August 18, 1939, in Cuba. A right-handed catcher, Azcue signed with the Cincinnati Redlegs as an amateur free agent in 1956 and made his major league debut on August 3, 1960. He played for the Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, California Angels, and Milwaukee Brewers. He spent the bulk of his career with Cleveland, where he was selected to the 1968 American League All-Star team. Known for his strong throwing arm, he was nicknamed "The Immortal Azcue." He also played for the Cienfuegos Elephants, winning the Cuban League title and Caribbean Series in the 1959–60 season.
