Joe Birmingham

Joe Birmingham, given name Joseph Leo, known as "Dode" (December 3, 1884 – April 23, 1946). He was born in Elmira, New York and died in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico. He stood 5 feet 10 inches and weighed 185 pounds. He batted and threw right-handed. He debuted in the majors in 1906 and played his last big-league season in 1914, a stretch of 9 seasons, primarily with the Cleveland Naps of the American League. His full professional career, including the minor leagues, ran from 1904 through 1920. After his playing days he managed in the majors from 1912 through 1915. His card presence in this catalog spans the E254 Colgan's Chips chewing-gum issue produced from 1909 through 1912, a set notable for its broad coverage of major and minor league players; the E97 Briggs Lozenges candy issue of 1909; and the T206 White Border tobacco issue, distributed by the American Tobacco Company between 1909 and 1911. He is interred at Sauquoit Valley Cemetery in Clayville, New York.
