Joe Ellis

Joseph Franklin Ellis, born May 3, 1944, is an American former professional basketball player who played eight seasons in the NBA for the Warriors, first in San Francisco and later in Oakland. Before turning professional, he attended McClymonds High School in Oakland, where from 1960 to 1962 he was a member of three Tournament of Champions teams. He earned All Tournament Team honors in both of his varsity years and was named the All Tournament Most Valuable Player as a senior. He was also selected to the All City Teams and, in 1962, was named the Northern California Player of the Year. Ellis remained in state for college, joining the University of San Francisco, where he played for the Dons from 1963 to 1966. He was named to First Team All Conference each of those years, was selected Northern California Player of the Year, and received All American honorable mention. In 1965 he was one of four juniors chosen to represent the United States in the World University Games. He scored 1,120 points for the team, the third-best total in school history. Ellis was inducted into the USF Hall of Fame in 1973 and was named one of 75 "Legends of the Hilltop."
