Joe Malone

Maurice Joseph Cletus "Joe" Malone (February 28, 1890 – May 15, 1969) was a Canadian professional ice hockey centre who played in the National Hockey Association and the National Hockey League from 1910 to 1924. Born the second of eleven children in Saint-Colomb-de-Sillery, a town outside Quebec City, he suited up for the Quebec Bulldogs, Montreal Canadiens, and Hamilton Tigers over the course of his career.

Known for both his scoring and his clean play, Malone led the NHA in goals twice, in 1913 and 1917 (the latter in a tie), and won the Stanley Cup with Quebec in 1912 and 1913. After the NHL was formed, he led the league in goals and points in 1918 and again in 1920.

In the inaugural 1917–18 NHL season, Malone scored 2.20 goals per game over 20 games, a single-season rate that remains the highest ever recorded. In 1920 he became the only player in NHL history to score seven goals in a single game. He holds or shares 13 NHL records that have endured more than a century after his retirement, including seven that have never been matched.

One of the first hockey stars of the early twentieth century, Malone was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1950.
