Joe McCarthy

Joseph Vincent McCarthy (April 21, 1887 – January 13, 1978) was an American Major League Baseball manager, best known for leading the "Bronx Bombers" teams of the New York Yankees from 1931 to 1946. He became the first manager to win pennants with both a National League and an American League club, doing so with the Chicago Cubs in 1929 and the Yankees in 1932. Over his career he won nine league pennants and seven World Series championships, the latter a record tied only by Casey Stengel.

McCarthy posted a 100-win season six times, a mark matched only by Bobby Cox. His regular-season winning percentage of .615 and his postseason percentage of .698, compiled entirely in the World Series, are the highest in major league history. His 2,125 career victories rank ninth all-time among managers, and his 1,460 wins place him first all-time among Yankees managers.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Irish-born parents, McCarthy grew up in the city's Germantown neighborhood and idolized Athletics manager Connie Mack. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1957.
