Joe McCormick

Joseph Wallace McCormick (1894–1958) was a Canadian-born forward from Buckingham, Quebec, who built his early career playing amateur hockey in Pittsburgh for the Duquesne Garden and Pittsburgh Athletic Association clubs. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War I and served in France; his honorable discharge qualified him for naturalized American citizenship, which he received on March 17, 1920. Five weeks later he captained the U.S. ice hockey team at the 1920 Summer Olympics, where the squad earned a silver medal. He returned to Pittsburgh and played for the Yellow Jackets through 1922, ranking among the leading scorers in the amateur ranks and drawing notice for a shot powerful enough to beat goaltenders from fifty feet.
