Dossier

Joe Leonard Morgan (September 19, 1943 – October 11, 2020) was an American professional baseball second baseman who played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1963 to 1984. Born in Bonham, Texas, he was African American and the oldest of six children; his family moved to Oakland, California, when he was five. Owing to his small stature, he was nicknamed "Little Joe."

Morgan began his career with the Houston Colt .45s, later the Astros, and went on to play for the Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, and Oakland Athletics. His most decorated seasons came with the Reds, where he won World Series championships in 1975 and 1976 and was named the National League Most Valuable Player in each of those years. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990, his first year of eligibility.

After retiring as a player, Morgan became a baseball broadcaster, working for the Reds, Giants, ABC, and ESPN, with a stint in the mid-to-late 1990s on NBC's postseason telecasts alongside Bob Costas and Bob Uecker. He also hosted a weekly nationally syndicated radio show on Sports USA and served as a special advisor to the Reds.
