Dossier

Joseph Robert Theismann, born September 9, 1949, is an American former professional football player who played quarterback in the National Football League and the Canadian Football League. He played college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Theismann spent twelve seasons with the Washington Redskins, earning two Pro Bowl selections and leading the team to consecutive Super Bowl appearances. Washington won Super Bowl XVII over the Miami Dolphins and lost Super Bowl XVIII to the Los Angeles Raiders. During the eleventh game of the 1985 NFL season, Theismann suffered a career-ending leg injury that forced him to retire.

After his playing career, Theismann worked as a sportscaster and analyst on professional football broadcasts with ESPN for nearly twenty years. He primarily partnered with Mike Patrick on the network's Sunday Night Football package and spent one season on Monday Night Football alongside Mike Tirico and Tony Kornheiser. He later served as a color analyst on NFL Network's Thursday Night Football package with play-by-play voice Bob Papa and Matt Millen. Beyond broadcasting, Theismann worked as a corporate speaker and restaurateur. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003.
