Joe Torre

Joseph Paul Torre Jr. (born July 18, 1940) is an American professional baseball player, manager, executive, and former television color commentator. His playing career began in 1960 with the Milwaukee Braves, where he worked as a catcher and first baseman. He later played for the St. Louis Cardinals, primarily at third base, and the New York Mets. Over his playing career he recorded 2,342 hits.

In 1977 Torre became a manager, briefly serving as the Mets' player-manager before retiring as a player. His managerial career spanned 29 seasons and included tenures with the same three clubs for which he had played. From 1996 to 2007 he managed the New York Yankees, guiding the team to six American League pennants and four World Series championships. He ranks fifth all-time in Major League Baseball history with 2,326 wins as a manager. With 2,342 hits as a player and more than 2,000 wins as a manager, Torre is the only major leaguer to reach both 2,000 hits as a player and 2,000 wins as a manager.

Following his managerial career, Torre served as Major League Baseball's chief baseball officer from 2011 to 2020, and has served as a special assistant to the commissioner of Major League Baseball since 2020.
