John Davidson

John Arthur Davidson, born February 27, 1953, is a Canadian-American ice hockey goaltender turned executive. He grew up in western Canada and played junior hockey in Calgary, Alberta. Davidson was drafted fifth overall in the 1973 NHL amateur draft, becoming the first goalie in NHL history to jump directly from a major junior league to the NHL.

He began his professional career with the St. Louis Blues, splitting duties with veteran Wayne Stephenson during his rookie year and posting slightly better numbers than the veteran, including a goals-against average of 3.08. Just before the start of his second season, the Blues dealt Stephenson to Philadelphia. Davidson later played for the New York Rangers, whom he helped reach the 1979 Stanley Cup Final.

After his playing days, Davidson became a long-time ice hockey broadcaster. He was honoured by the Hockey Hall of Fame with the 2009 Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his contributions to broadcasting. He went on to a career as a hockey executive, and serves as senior advisor and alternate governor for the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League. He also briefly served as Columbus' interim general manager during the 2023-24 season.
