Dossier

John Howard Getty "J. J." Johnson (October 18, 1947 – January 7, 2016) was an American professional basketball player. A 6'7" small forward, he played high school basketball at Messmer High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where as a senior he helped lead the team to the Wisconsin state title in 1966. He went on to play college basketball at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming, and at the University of Iowa, suiting up for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Over two seasons at Iowa he led the team in both scoring and rebounding each year. As a senior he set an Iowa record for points in a season, averaging 27.9 points per game, and he holds the program's top two single-game scoring performances, with 49 and 46 points. Alongside future Seattle SuperSonics teammate Fred Brown, Johnson guided Iowa to a 14–0 Big Ten record and an NCAA tournament berth in 1970. He was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the 7th pick of the 1970 NBA draft, and was also chosen in the 1970 ABA Draft by the Dallas Chaparrals, who briefly became the Texas Chaparrals the following season.
