John P. Mengelt, born October 16, 1949, is an American former professional basketball player who played guard over ten seasons in the National Basketball Association.

Mengelt grew up in Elwood, Indiana, where he was a two-year starter at Wendell Willkie High School (now Elwood High School). He earned all-conference honors twice, was named an Indiana All-Star sponsored by the Indianapolis Star, and was twice selected to the Indiana all-state team. He also competed in football, earning All-State recognition as a senior, as well as baseball and track and field.

A 6'2" guard, Mengelt played college basketball for the Auburn Tigers. As a sophomore in 1968–69, he led the team in scoring at 19.4 points per game, adding 4.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists while shooting .525 from the field and .807 from the free throw line, as Auburn finished 15–10. He was named second-team All-SEC by UPI and AP and first-team by the conference coaches. As a junior in 1969–70, he again led the 15–11 Tigers in scoring, setting a school record of 26.8 points per game along with 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists, shooting .465 from the field and .800 from the free throw line.
