Johnny Callison

John Wesley Callison (March 12, 1939 – October 12, 2006) was an American professional baseball player who played 16 seasons in Major League Baseball as a right fielder. Born in Qualls, Oklahoma, he batted left-handed and threw right-handed. The Chicago White Sox signed him out of East Bakersfield High School in 1957 and assigned him to the Class-C Bakersfield Bears of the California League, where he hit .340 with 17 home runs and 31 stolen bases. The following season he advanced to the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians, where he led the American Association in home runs.

Callison is best known for the ten years he spent with the Philadelphia Phillies, from 1960 through 1969. He was named an All-Star in three seasons, appearing in four All-Star Games. He led the National League in triples twice and in doubles once. His greatest prominence came in the 1964 season, when he was named Most Valuable Player of the All-Star Game and finished runner-up for the National League Most Valuable Player Award. He also led the National League in outfield assists four consecutive times and in double plays once. He ended his career among the top five Phillies in home runs, with 185, and in triples, with 84.
