John Thomas Groth (1926–2021) was a right-handed outfielder who played 15 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1946 to 1960. Born in Chicago, he attended the Latin School of Chicago before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1945. Signed by the Detroit Tigers as an amateur free agent in 1946, he debuted that September at age 20. He went on to play for the Tigers, St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox, Washington Senators, and Kansas City Athletics over the course of his career, later transitioning to a role as a scout.
