Dossier

Johnny Edward Morris (born September 26, 1935) is an American former professional football player who played as a flanker and halfback in the National Football League. Born in Long Beach, California, he attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School, where at 140 pounds he was deemed too small for varsity football and was relegated to Class B play; discouraged, he left the sport for the school's track team. Receiving no athletic scholarship offers after high school, he enrolled at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he became a star halfback for the Gauchos under coach Ed Cody. Weighing only 160 pounds, he excelled as a rusher, receiver, and returner.

Morris spent his entire ten-year career with the Chicago Bears. He won an NFL championship with the team in 1963. In 1964, he had his best season, recording 93 receptions for 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns; his 93 catches set an NFL record at the time. He remains the Bears' all-time leader in receiving yards with 5,059.
