Keith Magnuson

Keith Arlen Magnuson (April 27, 1947 – December 15, 2003) was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman who played in the National Hockey League between 1969 and 1979. Born in Wadena, Saskatchewan, he played college hockey at the University of Denver, where he was a two-time All-American and led his team to consecutive NCAA titles in 1968 and 1969.

Magnuson spent his entire NHL career with the Chicago Black Hawks, wearing number 3 across 589 games. He recorded 14 goals and 125 assists for 139 points. Though not an offensive contributor, he anchored a solid defensive team, and his most telling statistic was his 1,442 career penalty minutes, which included many fighting majors. He served as captain of the Blackhawks for several seasons. In April 1970, he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and he played in the NHL All-Star Game in 1971 and 1972. He reached the Stanley Cup Finals twice, in 1971 and 1973, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens, and never played for a Cup winner.

Magnuson was the great-uncle of Major League Baseball pitcher Trystan Magnuson and the uncle of former Canadian Football League player Quinn Magnuson.
