Ken Dryden

Kenneth Wayne Dryden (August 8, 1947 – September 5, 2025) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who also worked as a politician, lawyer, businessman, and author. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, to Murray Dryden and Margaret Adelia Campbell, he was raised in Islington, then a suburb of Toronto, and played junior hockey with the Etobicoke Indians of the Metro Junior league. He tended goal for the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League from 1971 to 1979. Over those seasons he won the Stanley Cup six times and the Vezina Trophy, awarded to the goaltender on the team allowing the fewest goals, five times. During his rookie campaign he won both the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs and the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983. After his playing career, Dryden served as a Liberal Member of Parliament from 2004 to 2011 and was appointed Minister of Social Development from 2004 to 2006, work for which he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2017, the NHL commemorated him as one of the league's 100 Greatest Players, and in 2020 he received the Order of Hockey in Canada.
