Kent Douglas

Kent Gemmell Douglas, born February 6, 1936, and died April 12, 2009, was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman and coach. He began his career with the Kitchener Canucks of the Ontario Hockey Association, spending two seasons there before moving on to eight seasons in the American Hockey League and the Western Hockey League with the Springfield Indians, Winnipeg Warriors, and Vancouver Canucks. With Springfield, Douglas played under Hall of Famer Eddie Shore, the team's owner, learning Shore's tough defensive style. That approach contributed to the Indians winning three consecutive Calder Cup championships from 1960 to 1962.

Douglas reached the National Hockey League in 1962–63, joining the Toronto Maple Leafs. He carried his aggressive style into his rookie NHL season, recording 22 points and 105 penalty minutes in 70 games. That year the Leafs advanced to the Stanley Cup Final against the Detroit Red Wings, defeating them in five games and giving Douglas a Stanley Cup championship in his first NHL season.
