Lance Alworth

Lance Dwight Alworth (born August 3, 1940) is an American former professional football wide receiver who played eleven seasons, from 1962 through 1972. He spent the bulk of his career with the San Diego Chargers, first in the American Football League and later in the National Football League, and finished with the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL. Nicknamed "Bambi," he was given the name by teammates who noted his baby face and his ability to run like a deer.

Alworth was born in Houston, Texas, the second of two children of Dick and Beth Alworth, and was raised in Hog Chain, a small community in Lincoln County, Mississippi. He came from an athletic family; his sister Ann ran the 50- and 75-yard dashes well enough to be invited to the Olympic Games trials, an invitation she declined. As a child, Alworth was a gifted all-around athlete, and the Jackson Clarion-Ledger reported that he hit a 400-foot home run in Little League Baseball at the age of twelve. He played football at Brookhaven.

He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1978, becoming the first inductee whose playing career was principally in the American Football League. He is also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
