Lanny McDonald

Lanny King McDonald, born February 16, 1953, is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player whose National Hockey League career spanned 16 years, from 1973 to 1989. A forward, he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies, and Calgary Flames, appearing in over 1,100 games and recording 500 goals and more than 1,000 points.

The Maple Leafs selected McDonald fourth overall in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft. He established himself as an offensive forward in Toronto, posting three consecutive 40-goal seasons in the mid-1970s. His trade to the Rockies in 1979 prompted Toronto fans to protest the deal in front of Maple Leaf Gardens. After parts of three seasons in Denver, he was traded to Calgary in 1981, where he remained for the rest of his career. In 1982–83 he scored 66 goals, a total that remains the Flames' single-season franchise record.

McDonald co-captained the Flames to a Stanley Cup championship in 1988–89, his final season. He is among the most popular players in Flames history, and his personality and bushy red moustache made him a well-known figure in the sport. He won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for dedication and sportsmanship.
