Leo Durocher

Leo Ernest Durocher (July 27, 1905 – October 7, 1991) was an American professional baseball player, manager, and coach who spent half a century in the game. Nicknamed "Leo the Lip" and "Lippy," he played in Major League Baseball as an infielder. He was born in West Springfield, Massachusetts, the youngest of four sons of French Canadian immigrant parents; his mother worked as a hotel maid and his father as a railroad engineer.

Durocher is best remembered for his managerial career. Across 25 years as a manager he posted only four losing seasons and won three National League pennants and one world championship. Upon his retirement his 2,008 career victories ranked fifth all-time among managers and second only to John McGraw in National League history. He still ranks thirteenth in career wins by a manager.

A controversial and outspoken figure, Durocher feuded repeatedly with authority, the baseball commissioner, the press, and umpires. His 100 career ejections as a manager trailed only McGraw at the time of his retirement, and he still ranks third on the all-time list.

Durocher was posthumously elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994.
