Leonard Gray

Leonard Earl Gray (December 19, 1951 – June 13, 2006) was an American professional basketball player. He was born at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, and raised in Kansas City, Kansas, where his stature earned him the local nickname "Hugie."

Gray attended Sumner High School, playing basketball all four years and football through his junior year. He broke his leg during his junior football season and chose not to return to the sport as a senior. As a senior in basketball, Gray led the Sumner Spartans to an undefeated season and the 1969 Kansas Class 4 state championship. In the state title game against McPherson High School, he recorded 24 points and 22 rebounds. His high school coach, Roy Flook, told the Kansas City Star that college coaches had described Gray as the top prospect in the country.

In a ceremony at Sumner High School on May 6, 1969, Gray signed a letter of intent with the University of Kansas, choosing the school over offers from more than 100 college programs, including UCLA, Harvard, Yale, and universities in the Big 8 and Big Ten Conferences.
