Lewis Albert Fonseca (1899–1989) was a first and second baseman who played 12 seasons in Major League Baseball for the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians, and Chicago White Sox. A contact hitter who topped .300 six times, his best season came in 1929 when he batted .369 to win the American League batting title — a remarkable comeback after breaking his leg in 1928. Injuries ultimately shortened his career; a broken arm in 1930 and a torn ligament ended his playing days. He finished with a .316 career average, 518 runs, and 485 RBI across 937 games.
