Lionel Hitchman

Frederick Lionel Hitchman (1901–1969) was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman who spent twelve NHL seasons with the Ottawa Senators and Boston Bruins. Born in Toronto and raised in Ottawa, he was regarded as one of the premier defensemen of his era, forming a highly effective pairing with Eddie Shore in Boston. On February 22, 1934, the Bruins retired his number 3 — only the second time in North American professional sports history a player's number had been officially retired, coming eight days after the Toronto Maple Leafs honored Ace Bailey with the first such retirement.
