Dossier

Louis Boudreau (July 17, 1917 – August 10, 2001), nicknamed "Old Shufflefoot," "Handsome Lou," and "the Good Kid," was an American professional baseball player and manager. He played 15 seasons in Major League Baseball, primarily as a shortstop for the Cleveland Indians, and managed four teams over 15 seasons, including 10 as a player-manager. Before turning professional, he was a dual-sport athlete at the University of Illinois, earning All-American honors in basketball.

Boudreau was selected an All-Star in seven seasons. He won the 1944 American League batting title with a .327 average and led the league in doubles in 1941, 1944, and 1947. On July 14, 1946, he hit four consecutive doubles in a game, a major league record he still holds. He led American League shortstops in fielding eight times and recorded the most hits of any player during the 1940s, with 1,578.

In 1948, Boudreau won the American League Most Valuable Player Award and, as player-manager, led the Cleveland Indians to the World Series title. After his playing career he served as a radio announcer for the Chicago Cubs.

In 1970, Boudreau was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and the Indians retired his No. 5 that same year.
