Dossier

Louis Clark Brock (June 18, 1939 – September 6, 2020) was an American professional baseball left fielder whose 19-year Major League career spanned 1961 to 1979. He began with the Chicago Cubs in 1961 but spent the majority of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he established himself primarily in left field.

Brock was best known for his base stealing. He led the National League in stolen bases in eight seasons and set then-major league records for the most steals in a single season and over a career. He was named an All-Star in six seasons. A member of the 3,000-hit club, he batted over .300 in seven full seasons, with three additional full seasons at .297, .298, and .299, finishing with a .293 career batting average. He led the National League in doubles and triples in 1968 and in singles in 1972, and was the runner-up for the NL Most Valuable Player Award in 1974. In his final season, at age 40 in 1979, he batted .304 over 436 plate appearances.

After retiring as a player, Brock served as a special instructor coach for the Cardinals. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985 in his first year of eligibility and was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014.
