Luke Appling

Lucius Benjamin Appling, nicknamed "Old Aches and Pains," was an American professional baseball shortstop who played twenty seasons in Major League Baseball, from 1930 to 1950. Born April 2, 1907, in High Point, North Carolina, he attended Fulton High School in Atlanta, Georgia. He later recounted that he had been lefthanded, as his father was, until high school, when he taught himself to throw righthanded so that he could play shortstop. He attended Oglethorpe College in Atlanta for two years before entering professional baseball.

Appling was signed by the minor league Atlanta Crackers in 1930 and debuted with the Chicago White Sox later that same year. He spent his entire major league career with the White Sox, interrupting it in 1944 and 1945 to serve in World War II, and played in Chicago through 1950.

After his playing days, Appling remained in the game for many years as a minor league manager and a major league coach. In 1967 he served a single stint as an interim major league manager. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964. Appling died in Georgia on January 3, 1991.
