Mahdi Abdul-Rahman

Mahdi Abdul-Rahman, born Walter Raphael Hazzard Jr. (April 15, 1942 – November 18, 2011), was an American professional basketball player and college basketball coach. He attended Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, where his teams compiled an 89–3 record and he was named the city's player of the year as a senior. He went on to the University of California, Los Angeles, becoming a key player on the Bruins varsity squad. In his first varsity season, UCLA reached its first Final Four at the 1962 NCAA tournament, losing 72–70 to eventual champion Cincinnati in the semifinals. He was a member of UCLA's first national championship team in 1964. That same year, he won a gold medal with the United States national team at the 1964 Summer Olympics.

Hazzard began his professional career in the National Basketball Association with the Los Angeles Lakers, who selected him as a territorial pick in the 1964 NBA draft. He was named an NBA All-Star with the Seattle SuperSonics in 1968.

After his playing career ended, he served as the head coach at UCLA during the 1980s.
