Mal Hammack

Malcolm Eugene Hammack (1933–2004) was a running back in the National Football League who played twelve seasons during the 1950s and 1960s. Born in Roscoe, Texas, he attended Arlington State Junior College before transferring to the University of Florida, where he played for the Florida Gators under coach Bob Woodruff in 1953 and 1954. As a senior, he earned second-team All-Southeastern Conference honors and became the first recipient of the Fergie Ferguson Award, given to the senior football player who displays outstanding leadership, character, and courage. He went on to play professionally for the Chicago/St. Louis Cardinals.
