Dossier

Martin "Marty" Burke (January 28, 1905 – March 7, 1968) was a defenceman in the National Hockey League who suited up for the Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Chicago Black Hawks. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Burke was part of two Stanley Cup championship squads with Montreal in 1930 and 1931. He may hold a notable place in NHL history as the first player to wear a helmet during a game, having donned one in December 1928 to protect an injured ear.
