Matt Hazeltine

Matthew Emory Hazeltine, Jr. (August 2, 1933 – January 13, 1987) was an American professional football player who spent 15 seasons as a linebacker in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants.

Hazeltine was born August 2, 1933, in Ross, California, in Marin County north of San Francisco. He graduated from Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley in 1951, where he starred at linebacker. His father, Matt Sr., had played on the University of California's rugby team in 1914 and its football team in 1915.

Hazeltine followed his father to the University of California, Berkeley, playing under coach Pappy Waldorf as a linebacker and center from 1951 to 1954, and also competing in rugby. He earned All-American honors as a freshman in 1951, freshmen being eligible for varsity play because of the Korean War; his first start came at center. He was named an All-American twice during his college career.

Over his 15 NFL seasons with the 49ers and Giants, Hazeltine was selected to the Pro Bowl twice. He died January 13, 1987. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
