Dossier

Mateo "Matty" Rojas Alou, a Dominican outfielder and manager, was born December 22, 1938, and died November 3, 2011. He played in Major League Baseball from 1960 to 1974, and later appeared in Nippon Professional Baseball with the Taiheiyo Club Lions from 1974 through 1976. A two-time All-Star, he won the National League batting championship in 1966.

Matty was the middle of three baseball-playing brothers, between the older Felipe and the younger Jesús. In 1963 with the San Francisco Giants, the three became the first set of siblings to all bat in the same half-inning, doing so on September 10, and to play together in the same outfield, on September 15. The latter came in the final two innings of a 13–5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field: starting right fielder Felipe shifted to left in the seventh when Jesús entered in right, then to center in the eighth when Matty was inserted in left.

Matty had been a teammate of Felipe during the previous three seasons and played alongside Jesús for the following two. He and Felipe reunited with the New York Yankees in 1973.
