Maurice Richard

Joseph Henri Maurice Richard (August 4, 1921 – May 27, 2000) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who spent all 18 of his National Hockey League seasons with the Montreal Canadiens. Nicknamed the "Rocket," he was the first player in NHL history to score 50 goals in a single season, reaching the mark in 50 games during the 1944–45 campaign, and the first to record 500 career goals. With Elmer Lach and Toe Blake, he formed the "Punch line," a high-scoring forward unit of the 1940s. He won the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player in 1947, played in 13 All-Star Games, and was named to 14 post-season NHL All-Star teams, eight of them on the first team. Richard was a member of eight Stanley Cup championship teams, including a league-record five consecutive titles between 1956 and 1960, and served as the team's captain. He retired in 1960 as the NHL's all-time leader in goals with 544. His younger brother Henri also played his entire career with the Canadiens, the two appearing as teammates during Maurice's final five seasons; a centre nicknamed the "Pocket Rocket," Henri is enshrined alongside Maurice in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Richard was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history in 2017.
