Mel Renfro

Melvin Lacy Renfro, born December 30, 1941, in Houston, Texas, was an American professional football player who spent his entire 14-year career as a cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. Renfro's family moved to Portland, Oregon, where he attended Jefferson High School and competed as a two-way football player and a track and field athlete. As a sophomore and junior, he contributed to a 23–0 record that included consecutive Class A-1 state championships in 1957 and 1958. The 1958 Jefferson team is regarded as one of the strongest in Oregon prep history, with a backfield of Renfro at halfback, quarterback Terry Baker, halfback Mickey Hergert, and his brother Raye Renfro at fullback, who broke a Portland Interscholastic League record with 24 touchdowns that year. Baker went on to win the 1962 Heisman Trophy at Oregon State, and Hergert became one of the leading ground gainers in the nation at Lewis & Clark College. After Baker graduated, Renfro saw playing time at quarterback as a senior in 1959 and earned all-state selection at running back. Renfro is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
