Dossier

Miguel Ángel Cuellar Santana (May 8, 1937 – April 2, 2010) was a Cuban professional baseball player who pitched left-handed in Major League Baseball across 15 seasons, appearing in 1959 and from 1964 through 1977. He is best remembered for his time with the Baltimore Orioles, who won the American League pennant in each of his first three seasons with the club and captured the 1970 World Series. Over his career he also pitched for the Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros and California Angels.

In 1969, Cuellar shared the American League Cy Young Award with Denny McLain, the two finishing in a tie in the voting. He won 20 or more games in a season four times for the Orioles between 1969 and 1974. In 1971 he was one of four Baltimore starters to reach at least 20 wins, alongside Jim Palmer, Dave McNally and Pat Dobson. Nicknamed "Crazy Horse" for his superstitious nature, Cuellar ranks among the Orioles' top five career leaders in wins (143), strikeouts (1,011), shutouts (30) and innings pitched (2,028).

In 1982, Cuellar was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame.
