Mike Karakas

Michael George Karakas (November 13, 1910 – May 2, 1992) was a goaltender from Aurora, Minnesota, and the NHL's first American-born and -trained goaltender. He played eight seasons with the Chicago Black Hawks between 1935 and 1946, winning the Calder Memorial Trophy as a rookie after posting a 1.85 goals-against average with nine shutouts in 48 games. He appeared in two Stanley Cup Finals, helping Chicago win the 1938 championship — despite playing the final two games in a steel-toed boot after breaking his foot in the semifinals. Karakas is a charter member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.
