Mike Phipps

Michael Elston Phipps, born November 19, 1947, was an American professional football player who played quarterback for 12 seasons in the National Football League during the 1970s and 1980s. He was born in Shelbyville, Indiana, and attended Columbus High School in Columbus, Indiana, where he played for the Columbus Bulldogs.
Phipps attended Purdue University and played for the Purdue Boilermakers, beginning his college career when he replaced All-American quarterback Bob Griese. His first major victory came on September 30, 1967, a 28–21 upset of defending national champion Notre Dame. Combining strong passing skills with mobility, he established a new school single-season record for total offense and helped the Boilermakers earn a share of the Big Ten Conference title. He was recognized as an All-American.
Phipps was selected third overall in the 1970 NFL draft. Over his professional career he played for the Cleveland Browns and the Chicago Bears.
