Murray Balfour

Murray Gordon Louis Balfour (August 24, 1936 – May 30, 1965) was a Canadian ice hockey right wing who played in the National Hockey League from 1956 to 1965 with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Black Hawks, and Boston Bruins. He began his NHL career with the Canadiens, appearing in five games across the 1956–57 and 1957–58 seasons while spending most of those years with Montreal's minor-league affiliates, the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens and the Montreal Royals. Unable to crack the Canadiens' lineup full-time behind a right-wing corps that included Maurice Richard, Bernie Geoffrion, and Claude Provost, Balfour spent the 1958–59 season with the minor-league Rochester Americans before being sold to the Chicago Black Hawks for cash. In Chicago he skated on the noted "Million Dollar Line" alongside Bobby Hull and Bill Hay. During the 1961 Stanley Cup playoffs he scored a triple-overtime game-winner in game three of the first round, and that spring he won the Stanley Cup with the Black Hawks. Balfour's playing career was cut short by lung cancer, which led to his death in 1965 at the age of 28.
