Dossier

Napoleon "Larry" Lajoie — also called Poli — (1874–1959) was Cleveland's marquee second baseman through the early American League years; the team itself was renamed the Naps in his honor. Born September 5, 1874 in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, he debuted in 1896 and played twenty-one MLB seasons through 1916, managing Cleveland from 1905 to 1909. In 1911, age 36, he hit .365 with 60 RBI — still an elite hitter at the back end of his prime. A 6–1”, 195-pound right-handed thrower and hitter, Lajoie appears across the 1909–1911 caramel issues: E90-1 American Caramel, E92 Croft's Candy and Cocoa, E92 Dockman & Sons Gum, E92 Nadja Caramels, E103 Williams Caramels, and E254 Colgan's Chips. He died February 7, 1959 in Daytona Beach, Florida and is buried at Section A, Lot 70, Space 4 of Daytona Memorial Park. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1937.
