"Newsy" Lalonde

Édouard Cyrille "Newsy" Lalonde (October 31, 1887 – November 21, 1970) was a Canadian professional ice hockey forward and professional lacrosse player. Born to Pierre and Rose Lalonde, he worked as a minor first as a reporter and then as a printer for the Cornwall Freeholder and the Woodstock, Ontario Express newspapers, which is where he acquired the "Newsy" moniker.

Lalonde played for the Montreal Canadiens in both the National Hockey Association and the National Hockey League, and is considered the original "Flying Frenchman." As player-coach, he led the Canadiens to their first Stanley Cup in 1916. His goal-scoring during the 1919 Stanley Cup playoffs set three NHL records that have remained unbroken for over a century. He also played for the Saskatoon Sheiks of the Western Canada Hockey League. He is regarded as among the foremost hockey and lacrosse players of the first half of the 20th century and one of Canadian sport's most colourful characters.

On May 7, 1913, Lalonde married Iona Elizabeth Letters (1899–1966), daughter of James Harcourt and Sarah Job. The couple had two children.
