Nick Buoniconti

Nicholas Anthony Buoniconti (December 15, 1940 – July 30, 2019) was an American professional football player who played middle linebacker in the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL). Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, he was raised in the predominantly Italian South End of the city, where his family ran Mercolino's Italian Bakery. He attended Cathedral High School and went on to play college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Buoniconti was drafted by the AFL's Boston Patriots in the 13th round of the 1962 AFL draft. He played for the Patriots before joining the Miami Dolphins, with whom he won two Super Bowls. Over the course of his career he competed in both the AFL and the NFL as a middle linebacker.
He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001. In 1985, his son Marc suffered a serious injury while playing football.
