Dossier

Calvin Parker MacDonald (June 14, 1933 – August 17, 2017) was a Canadian professional ice hockey left winger who played for five National Hockey League teams between 1953 and 1969. He began in the Ontario Hockey Association with the Toronto Marlboros in the 1951–52 season, where he started turning heads as a natural goal-scorer, though management felt he needed time to blossom. He made his NHL debut in 1952, playing a single game for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The following season he was promoted to the American Hockey League, playing for the Pittsburgh Hornets until he earned full-time status with the Leafs in 1954. After that season, the New York Rangers selected MacDonald from the Leafs' roster in the Intra-League Draft, and he continued to be shuffled between the Rangers and their AHL affiliates. When New York gave up on him, MacDonald consulted a doctor about a chronically sore shoulder and discovered a chunk of metal still embedded in it — a broken drill left behind during a previous operation. After his playing career ended in 1969, MacDonald turned to coaching, leading the Minnesota North Stars and the Los Angeles Kings.
