Dossier

Paul Joseph Arizin (April 9, 1928 – December 12, 2006), nicknamed "Pitchin Paul," was an American basketball player who spent his entire National Basketball Association career as a forward with the Philadelphia Warriors from 1950 to 1962. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to French immigrants, Arizin did not play basketball at La Salle College High School, failing to make the team in his only tryout as a senior; he graduated a year before fellow future Hall of Famer Tom Gola entered the school as a freshman. During his freshman year at Villanova University, Arizin played Catholic Youth Organization basketball in Philadelphia, where Villanova varsity coach Al Severance saw him play late in the season and afterward asked him to come to Villanova. He developed into a high-scoring forward there before being drafted by the Warriors of the fledgling NBA. Over his career he scored 16,266 points, the third-highest total in NBA history at the time of his retirement. He was later named to the NBA's 25th, 50th, and 75th anniversary teams.
