Dossier

Paul Edward Lowe (born September 27, 1936) is an American former professional football player who played halfback in the American Football League, primarily with the Los Angeles and San Diego Chargers. Born in Homer, Louisiana, he grew up in the Los Angeles area and was a native of Compton, California, where as a child he jumped the fence of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to watch the Los Angeles Rams. At Centennial High School he was a standout in football, track, and basketball. Lowe attended Oregon State University, playing for the Beavers under coach Tommy Prothro and serving as the No. 2 tailback in his sophomore year of 1956.

In the AFL, Lowe established himself as one of the league's premier backs. He won an AFL championship with the Chargers in 1963, and in 1965 he led the league in rushing yards and was named AFL Player of the Year. A four-time All-AFL selection and two-time AFL All-Star, he later finished his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, receiving a championship ring after the team won Super Bowl IV. Lowe was named to the AFL All-Time Team. He was inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame and named to the franchise's 40th and 50th anniversary teams.
