Dossier

Philip Henry Niekro, an American baseball pitcher nicknamed "Knucksie," was born April 1, 1939, in Blaine, Ohio, and grew up in Lansing, Ohio. He died December 26, 2020. Over 24 seasons in Major League Baseball, Niekro pitched for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, the Cleveland Indians, the New York Yankees, and the Toronto Blue Jays, relying on the knuckleball throughout his long career.

Niekro was selected to five All-Star teams. He led the National League in victories twice, in 1974 and 1979, and led the major leagues in earned run average in 1967. A capable fielder, he won the National League Gold Glove Award five times. He finished with 318 career victories, ranking 16th on the all-time wins list, and remains the only knuckleball pitcher to win 300 or more major league games. He also holds the major league record with 121 career victories after the age of 40.

Niekro and his younger brother Joe combined for 539 wins, the most by any pair of brothers in baseball history. Phil Niekro was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997.
