Preacher Roe

Elwin Charles "Preacher" Roe (1916–2008) was a right-handed pitcher who spent his Major League Baseball career with the St. Louis Cardinals (1938), Pittsburgh Pirates (1944–47), and Brooklyn Dodgers (1948–54). Born in Ash Flat, Arkansas, he picked up the nickname "Preacher" as a toddler. Before turning professional, Roe attended Harding College in Arkansas on a baseball scholarship, where he drew national attention in 1937 by striking out 26 batters in a 13-inning game. He was named to the All-Star team five times during his career.
