Prentice Gautt

Prentice Gautt (February 8, 1938 – March 17, 2005) was an American football running back who made history at the University of Oklahoma as the school's first black football player, wearing #38 from 1956 to 1959. When coaching staff resisted offering him a scholarship, a group of Black doctors and pharmacists funded his attendance; he earned a scholarship within a year. Gautt became a two-time All-Big Eight selection and earned Academic All-American honors as a senior. He went on to play professionally in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns and St. Louis Cardinals, then earned a Ph.D. in psychology and worked in conference athletics administration.
